What about the Council?

Media Statement

Diarmaid Ó Cadhla will contest the coming Local Elections in the Cobh Municipal District.

At a public meeting tonight (Wednesday) in Cobh he will invite others to contest the same election, in order to ensure the best possible representation for the people of the electoral area.

The meeting takes place at the Great Island Community Centre at 7.30pm on Wednesday 3rd April, all are welcome.

Here is a flyer Diarmaid issued for his campaign.

The Political Party representative have failed the people, they have acted as mere ‘noddies’ to the powerful vested interests that wield power, both in the Councils and in Leinster House.

For Councils to be meaningful, and representative of the community, the Political Party elite must be dumped – they do not represent us.

Cobh town is at a major loss because of the inaction of the elected Council.

Little Island, is the biggest source of rates revenue in County Cork, it continues to be neglected, where is their dividend?

Council is spending vast amounts of public money on vanity projects and junkets happen while essential services are starved of resources.

When I challenged this, as a member of Council in November 2018, I was ejected from the meeting.  My intention is to challenge it again and insist that money is directed where it is needed, I hope to have some allies in doing this.

Since stepping down from Cork County Council at the 2019 elections I have continued my involvement with the community, engaging on issues including housing and disability.

My candidacy in this election is supported by the Save Cobh’s Right of Way group and by the Glór Alliance.

It is a scandal that Council stands by while efforts are made to privatise the public Right of Way on Deepwater Quay in Cobh, while, at the same time, it invests huge sums in other greenways.

Cobh Local Electoral Area covers a wide area speading from Blarney/Monard/Bottlehill/Killard (north and east of the city) to Carrig na bhFear, Glanmire, Glounthaune, Rathpeacon, Knockraha, Little Island, Carrigtwohill and Great Island.

There are six seats in the Municipal District.
