Iarratas ar Chearta Teanga

An important application (as part of ongoing Judicial Review proceedings) will go before the High Court again on December 5th at 10am in regards to the status of the Irish Language.

The application is requesting a DECLARATION that the applicant (Diarmaid Ó Cadhla) is entitled to an official version of EU Directive 2012/13 in the Irish language, for use in the proceedings – which are being conducted in Irish.

The application is important as Irish is both the First Official Language of the state, and it is our National Language, and therefore access to legal documents needs to be available in Irish to facilitate this.

Irish is the only official and working language of the EU in which the entire body of legislation is not available.

If, for example, the Ukraine takes up membership of the EU in the coming years then every legal document since the 1950s will be published in their language.

Here are the documents of the application before the court:

01 – Treoir Pharlaimint na hEorpa – Fógra Foriarratais
02 – Treoir Pharlaimint na hEorpa – Ráiteas is Gá mar Fhoras ar an bhForiarratas
03 – Treoir Pharlaimint na hEorpa – Mionnscríbhinn Dhiarmaid Uí Chadhla

Here is a translation of these documents into English Translation.

It is a public hearing, everyone interested in the status of the Irish Language is encouraged to attend.
